Just a few miles as the crow flies from Abiquiu, Cañones
is an untouched hamlet at the end of a county road and at the
mouth of a deep canyon. Just over two miles into the canyon the
Cañoncito Seco, a spring-fed creek (not dry at all) descends
from high up on Polvadera Peak and flows into Cañones Creek.
There, our Cañoncito Creek Retreat is a most comfortable
location from which to explore large parts of Santa Fe National
Forest. Or just to rest and relax.
The Retreat is a hideaway deep in the canyon surrounded by impressive
mesas. No traffic can be heard or seen, privacy and peace are
absolute. Large herds of elk and wild turkey can be met on the
few explored trails. Or even better, you cut your own trail through
this spectacular wilderness. Abiquiu Lake, the Chama River Wilderness,
Ghost Ranch are just a short (but sensational) drive away. Fish
in the creek, search for wild mushrooms, collect colorful stones.
The home has a spacious living room with dining area and kitchen,
three bedrooms (two with queen-size beds, one with twin beds),
one full bathroom, one shower bath, and three different decks
from which one has great views of the forest. Pellet stove (and
radiant heat). Listen to the water singing in the creek. This
home is a good place to be in all seasons. In winter you would
want to drive a 4WD high-clearance vehicle.
