The Chama River runs through the 7.5 acres that comprise the site of Casa de Los Palacios. Walk through a gate, cross the Chili irrigation ditch and you are in a cottonwood bosque. In October these trees form their own river of brilliant yellow leaves. Home to wild ducks, great blue herons, swallows and kingfishers, the river and towering cliff provide a wild and natural corridor. Seasonal visitors include migrating sandhill cranes and bald eagles.

From the moment you step into the entry way you will be struck by the home’s beauty and attention to detail. Built as a family home in the 1980s the house is a blend of northern New Mexico architecture and passive solar design. The thick walls have a combination of mud plaster and tierra amarillo or yellow earth. The living room has a traditional mud floor. The house is filled with original art and one of a kind steel furniture made by the owner.

The bright sunny kitchen is the heart of the house. A large farmhouse table easily seats 10. The living room connects through an archway to the kitchen and is the most dramatic room in the house. Large windows face the massive Los Palacios escarpment and the bosque that borders the Rio Chama. Curl up on the suede sofa under a Pendleton blanket and watch the light change or retire to a reading chair to pass the time. 3 bedrooms and 2 baths make the house perfect for two couples or small family.
